It's Monday!! What Are You Reading?

This meme was started by Sheila at Book Journey. The kid's version was started by Jen at Teach Mentor Text and Kellee at Unleashing Readers.

This past week has been such a wonky week I didn't get much reading done. I had meetings after school, a snow day thrown in the middle of the week, a PD day on Friday and report cards. I did fit in three great books.

The first book was The Whispering Skull by Jonathan Stroud. This is the second in the Lockwood and Co. series. Click here for a summary on Goodreads. Wow, I loved this book! It is just as good as the first one! From the first chapter this book sucked me in again to the world of Lockwood and Co. There were a lot more twists and turns in this one and I was kept on the edge of my seat throughout the entire book. In fact, I had to give the book to my mother for a day, so I could work on report cards. If you haven't started this series I highly recommend that you do. There is a third book in the series, The Hollow Boy. Unfortunately it is not being published until September 2015!

2448886The other two books that I got a chance to read were from Penguin Young Readers. I received both copies to review. The first book was The First Dog by Jan Brett. Click here for a summary on Goodreads. This book was originally published in 1988, but is being released with a new cover. I somehow missed this book the first time around. I've always been a Jan Brett fan. This book has the gorgeous illustrations that you expect with a Jan Brett book. I liked the story of the first dog, but it is not one of my favorites. It could be because I'm not a dog person. Students will enjoy all the prehistoric animals in this story. I can see it being very popular in my library once I put it on the shelf.

22504704The second book that I had the pleasure of reviewing I am Jackie Robinson by Brad Meltzer. This book is part of the series Ordinary People Change the World. Click here a summary on Goodreads. This is another great book in a great series! I love that this series brings Jackie Robinson's life down to a level that the elementary students can relate too. It went into the details of what happened to Jackie Robinson without getting to graphic. I know that my students will love this biography. I can't wait to read and share more of them with my students!

What have you been reading? I'm looking for some suggestions on what to read next.

Happy Reading!!

  1. I am curious to see that Jackie Robinson title (and more in the series?). We have a fair number of Pebble Go books ... which I like for basic facts for the little ones, but you know. Variety and all. Plus there's a real story behind the people. Not just facts.

  2. I am so happy to hear that Whispering Skulls is as good as the first one. I've got it stashed away as an audiobook for when I am desperate for a treat.

  3. Hi there Stacey - would you know how many Lockwood novels there are in all? I'm thinking of getting them as soon as they're all released just to be on the safe side. :)

    1. I'm not sure. I know book 3 isn't being released until later in 2015. I read somewhere there is suppose to be an ebook coming out as a short in February, I think.
