This book is a great story about friendship. I like how it shows that you might find a friend in the most unlikely person/animal. Karl and Hazel are totally opposites, but when they begin to drift off to sea together can they get along. I think that this one shows students that we can be friends with those who are different then ourselves.
If you haven't read this book, you are missing something special! I know I still ask, at least once, whenever I'm on a long trip "Are we there yet" and I get groans as an answer. For me long trips seem to slow down time and that is exactly what happened to the little boy in the story. Time slows down enough that he starts going backwards. There is SO much to see in the illustrations that each time I read it, I find something new. Dan Santat is an incredible author and illustrator of picture books. This is a great book to teach point of view and show how we all can see the same object/event differently. It is no secret I am a HUGE Salina Yoon fan, especially of Penguin. In this story, Penguin is excited to celebrate Christmas with his family. But we all know, things don't always go according to plan. This is a great Christmas gift to show that that this holiday isn't all about stuff. There are a lot of Salina's characters who make an appearance in this book. If this is the last Penguin book, it is such a heart warming story to end on. But I keep hoping that it is not!

This is such a sweet story of friendship and bravery! Last school year I read this book to all 22 of my classes (from Kindergarten to 5th Grade. I never got tired of reading this book at all! To me, that is a sign of a great book! I read it because things were changing a bit in the library and we all were going to be brave like Snail. The story itself is great, but Deborah Freeman's illustrations put this book over the top! Through her illustrations you can really feel all the emotions Fish and Snail are feeling!

This is another great addition to her cat series. I have loved the cat, but I think that this one is my favorite! These books have just the right amount of text to not be overwhelming to the beginning readers. With having a small amount of text, there can be lots of questions that parents and teachers can ask using the illustrations as a spring board for kids to form their answers. Speaking of the illustrations, Claudia Rueda has done another wonderful job bring cat's adventures to life. I was provided this book by Penguin Young Readers. This book will be published on August 8, 2017. I think I will have to buy another copy of this book for my library because I want to keep a copy for myself. My hope one day is to meet Deborah and have her sign my book!
My first reaction when started reading this book was, how much time do I have? I That thought was because I knew that I was going to need to read until I finished this book! The more I read, the more I didn't want this book to end. I enjoyed the journey that Laurel took me on. I felt like I was a fly living on Orphan Island. According to Mr. Shu, there are lots adults who get to the end of the book and are so upset at the way it ends. On the other hands lots of kids really like the ending. I found myself in agreeing with the kids. Once I reached the end, I was sad that it was over but I felt it was the perfect ending for the book. This is a must read, if you haven't already!
I had the pleasure of meeting Todd Nesloney in February 2017 in Florida. We are both on advisory boards for Scholastic Book Fairs. I learned a lot from talking and listen to him share ideas and information during our meetings. I knew that he had co-wrote a book, but it took me this long to get a hold of it. I'm glad I waited until the summer to read it, so that I can really think about the ideas that he and Adam Welcome wrote about. I read this book in three days. It was a very easy read, but it made me think quite a bit as I was reading. As I enter year 22 in my teaching career, this book reinforced that I need to continue to push myself to grow for my students. One of the most important ideas that I'll take from this book is to remember to celebrate even the smallest successes. Being in the library I see every student in the school. Many times it is one of the few places some of my school's neediest/behavior challenged kids are successful. I try to call home to give them a positive phone call because that is not the normal phone call for them. I do really well until about the middle of the year. I'm making it my goal to do better this coming year. I enjoyed this book so much, I even picked up a copy for my principal.
It feel so strange to be blogging again. I have really let this slide, but something had to give and this was it. I have been feeling terribly guilty about not blogging and have avoid reading most blogs that I do follow so I didn't add to the guilt. There is also a lot of changes coming to my job this next year, which we were told at the end of the school year. So I'm trying to plan for a new normal. I took a great vacation with my parents to celebrate their upcoming 50th wedding anniversary to Yellowstone National Park and Glacier National Park. On this vacation I took time to do a lot of quiet reflection on life, school, and everything in between (without doing any actual "work"). Sometimes I think that I have placed too much pressure on myself to do everything and I find myself doing nothing. So I taking this time as redo on my "New Year". I have been actually doing some reading, which I had stopped doing and I'm starting to blog again with this post. My goal is to work up to twice a week, but for now I will be happy posting every Monday!
The first was Full Cicada Moon by Marilyn Hilton. Click here for a summary on Goodreads. There is so much to like about this book that is written in verse. This book was set in the late 1960's when there was a lot going on that our students have never experienced. For example, when girls could only take home economics and boys could only take shop. The main character, Mimi, is a African American Japanese girl, who moves from a progressive California to a not as progressive Vermont. The racial experiences that Mimi deals with are written appropriately for the middle grade audience. I loved how Mimi is very enthusiastic about science, especially space. It is great to see a female character interested in science. I will admit, that going into this book I wasn't sure I was going to like it. But the more I read, the more I couldn't stop reading. This book is a MD Black-Eyed Susan (state book award) nominated book for the 2017-18 school year. I can't wait to book talk this book for my students next year.

The second historical fiction book I have read was Walking with Miss Millie by Tamara Bundy. Click here for a summary on Goodreads. From the first chapter, this book drew me in and didn't let me go. I started reading this book the night before I left on my 16 day vacation. I got to page 146 before I had to leave for the airport. Since I was already packed, I couldn't bring it along with me. And I had received my copy from Penguin Young Readers, so that meant that it wasn't published yet and I couldn't even buy an electronic copy! I thought about this book every day while I was on vacation. It had a hold on me and wasn't going to let go until I finished it. My first night back, after I unpacked and started on my laundry, I had to finish it. I wish we could all have a Miss Millie in our lives to offer those little nuggets of advice when we truly need it. This book tackles a lot in it pages: moving, absentee father, deaf brother, Alzheimer's, racism, and death. But even with all these heavy issues to deal with there is a lightness about this book. There is one quote from Miss Millie that stuck with me, especially given the beginning of this post, "I learned it's okay to get mad. It's okay to get sad, but after all that gettin' mad and sad, ya gotta get smart. Ya gotta take a step back, away from all your hurtin', and figure out what ya can change and what ya can't." I've typed this up to put on my desk at school, so that I can remember this wonderful piece of advice. This book made a very big impact on me and it is one that I won't ever forget!
Something that I'm hoping to fix, now that my life is starting to calm down. Instead of my usual It's Monday! What Are You Reading? post, I'm pleased to present a new picture book from Lindsay Ward.

This is the tale of the mighty Brobarians. Two warriors, once at peace…now at odds.

Iggy the Brobarian has taken over the land. Can Otto the Big Brobarian win it back? Or maybe, with a little help, the two brothers can find peace again…

I absolutely loved this book! This was such a unique way to approach sibling rivalry. The story was entertaining and easy to identify with, even being an only child. I have had a few friendships were we seemed more like siblings than friends. After I got done reading I had to go back and just look at the illustrations that Lindsay Ward created for the book. They are incredible! I especially loved the cloud that she made out of the red and blue lined writing paper. If you would like to see more of Lindsay's illustrations check out Alyson Beecher's post on the blog tour.

I always wonder how an author becomes inspired to write their books. I love being able to share that with my students. It lets them know that inspiration can come from an ordinary event. And now to let you know too:
Definitely check out Lindsay's website to find her other books. She has written quite a few! I'm going to be finding some that I haven't read soon. Also you can get a great coloring sheet of Otto and Iggy here! I'm even more excited, after reading Brobarians, for my friend to have her second child. They have decided to wait to find out the gender. She and her husband already have one boy and now I'm really hoping they have a second so I can give the family a copy of this book!
<span style="background-color: white; color: #38761d; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 22px;">Once again I had a crazy week! This week has felt like two weeks in one! On Monday we had snow, so we had a two hour late arrival. but I couldn't enjoy it. Over the weekend my parents had trouble with both of their cars. My dad had an MRI scheduled at 7:45am, but I didn't feel comfortable letting them drive in the snow. So I ended up getting up and driving them to the MRI facility. The only good thing about this was I had about a solid hour of reading time!
I just love a book written in verse and this one was great! I learned that there is so much I didn't know about the Tuskeegee Airmen. The verse form allow for a lot of information to be shared without becoming overwhelming. I really appreciated the timeline and all the resources that the author shared at the end of the book. This is one that I can't wait to share with my students. I hope that they will enjoy it as much as I did.
In this book we meet up with Bella, her dog, and Ben who has a remote controlled toy. As with the other two books things don't go according to plan. There is a lot of reader participation in this book too. I know that this will become a favorite of my students as the other two books have.

<span style="background-color: white; color: #38761d; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 22px;">I've got a very short post this week because last week was SO busy. On Wednesday I had author and illustrator Henry Cole visit my school. Monday and Tuesday of course, I was prepping for his visit. I'm a Type-A personality, so I had to make sure everything was in place. It was a great visit and was still the talk of the school on Thursday. My assistant did three AMAZING bulletin board! I will be posting about his visit, showing those amazing bulletin boards, and showing some pictures from his presentation. Can't wait to share his visit with everyone!
<span style="background-color: white; color: #38761d; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 22px;">

The first one was The Night Gardener by The Fan Brothers. Click here for a summary on Goodreads. I was so interested as I read the story to see what animal would appear next after a visit from the Night Gardener. The illustrations in this book took my breath away. This was another book that I had to go back and study the illustrations after I finished reading it. I know that I'm a little late to the party on this book, but I know I can't be alone. If you haven't read this book, don't delay in getting a copy of this book!
I have loved these books since I read If You Give a Mouse a Cookie. I am so excited to have another one because I love using these to teach my students the relationship between author and illustrator. Numeroff and Felicia Bond are such a dynamic duo that I don't think children of any age will tire of these books. I know that they are so hard to keep them on my shelf! This one will not disappoint! Can't wait to share it with my students.
My reading was done in short spurts this week. I was busy all week, but I can't remember what I did. This is a book I want to savor, so I want to wait until I can sit a finish it in one reading. All three of the books that I read were part of my latest Junior Library Guild delivery.
Ever since I read What Will Fat Cat Sit On, I look forward to reading any book by Jan Thomas. I love books where I can involve my students in helping me read. This book has the line "Is that wise, pig" over and over which the kids can help out with. Her illustrations add to the overall enjoyment of this book. I know this one will be a favorite of my students.
The next book I read was Narwhal: Unicorn of the Sea by Ben Clanton. Click here for a summary on Goodreads. This looks to be the first in a new series. I was so excited since it was a graphic novel for my younger students. My younger students love graphic novels, but usually want those that are way above their reading level. In this book Narwhal and "Jelly" become friends and have a lot of adventures. This book is going to be very popular in my library. I might just have to get a second copy. If you haven't seen this one, check it out. You won't be disappointed.
Click here for a summary on Goodreads. Yes, I read another nonfiction book! This one was awesome!! I learned so much about the octopus. I never realized there was so much that I didn't know. I think there are 10 different types of octopuses! On the pages with the different octopuses there is a size comparison. Some octopus are compared with the human body. While others are so small they are compared to the size of a human hand. This was a really neat nonfiction book. I can't wait to share it with my students.

I think after the playoff game I watched yesterday, I'm going to lose myself in books this week. My team will be watching from home this year. This was not the way I had hoped this season would have ended. But I will be rooting for the Atlanta Falcons to win the Super Bowl!!
I enjoyed the journey of this book and I was left wanting more at the end. I found myself really caring about the characters in this story. This was Rachel Hawkins first middle grade book, which I think is a success. Nolie travels to Scotland to spend the summer with her father. While there she meets a local girl named Bel. She shows Nolie all around and tells her the story of the Boundary, the fog just off the coast of the town. The is a legend about how and why the fog came to be there. No one who goes into the fog comes out, until Nolie and Bel spot Al on the beach. Al went into the fog in 1918 and has not aged a bit in the hundred years he has been gone. There is just enough creepy in this book for those elementary students who want a creepy book!
I never knew (or thought about) Florence Harding was the first first lady to have voted for her husband! My dad is a huge history buff, so it was fun to stump him with many of the interesting facts. I can't say enough about Matt Faulkner's illustrations, they are gorgeous!! Once I finished reading the text in the book, I had to go back I really look at the illustrations for all the details that Matt Faulkner included. This will be a great addition to my library! This book was sent to me from Penguin Young Readers.
I have a love/hate relationship with severe weather. I am fascinated by severe weather and whenever there is a big storm coming near where I live, I'm on top of all the updates. But I hate the damage and destruction it causes and the anxiety it causes in me. This book gave so much information about severe weather. Simon Winchester has been in many places for the severe storms and is able to give a personal experience about what it is like. There is so much information given in this book, it is not for just a casual reader. The photographs add so much to this book and really show the devastation that these storms can cause. There are a lot of great charts and little extras. It also has the NWS bulletin that Robert Ricks published right before Hurricane Katrina hit. As I read it, I remember reading this at the time and being scared, even though I was no where close to the path of this storm. This book was sent to me from Penguin Young Readers. It will be published on January 31st.
I enjoyed this book. I can see that it would be a great bedtime story for kids. It is not one that I would usually pick up, but the yawning yeti on the front cover drew me in! I hadn't realized that this one is the second yeti book that Vin Vogel wrote. The first was called The Thing About Yetis and was published in 2015. I think I'm going to have to find this one to read too.
This book is part of the Ordinary People Change the World series. Loved this book! Great introduction to Jim Henson for those who didn't grow up knowing who he was. I will admit I got teary-eyed at the end. I found myself thinking about what might have been if he had not passed away. The end papers in this book are great. It has Kermit's face on them! I think my favorite two lines came towards the end of the book "But the secret behind my best creations wasn't a strong had, or a catchy song, or even a funny voice. It was a simple idea: There's good in all of us" (Meltzer, 2017). I found this very meaningful especially with what is happening in our world today. I think we need to remember that there is good in all of us and we need to look harder to find it and bring it out. This book will be published tomorrow, January 10th.
I enjoyed this book because of all the interaction that the reader can have with the book. It reminded me of Press Here by Herve Tullet. I think that this is a great book to read to kids. A small group would be ideal since many pages require the reader to touch the pages to make the magic happen. This book will be published on January 17th.
This book was a lot of fun. I wasn't expecting an almost wordless picture book when I started. But it really doesn't need more than the word nope because the illustrations really tell the story. I read it straight through the first time and then had to go back a second time and really look at the illustrations. They really make the story since there is only one word throughout the book. I was amazed at the emotions that Sheneman could convey in a birds face! As I read about Drew Sheneman on the back flap, I was surprised to read that this is his first book for children. If this book is any indication, I hope he keeps writing for children! This book will be published on January 17th.
I have not been online as much recently, so I'm not up on a variety of books that I should put on my Must Reads list. But then I came across posts by Michelle Knott on her blog, Mrs. Knott's Book Nook. She posted lists of different picture books, nonfiction books, and middle grade novels that are going to be published in 2017. This helped me so much for creating part of this list!
See my review here. This book is due to be published on January 10th. I was given a copy by Penguin Young Readers for a review.
I'm still in disbelief that we have now started 2017! This past year was not the best one I have ever had, but I'm keep moving forward. On New Year's Eve, we had a set back with my aunt, who has the traumatic brain injury. She tried to get up from her wheelchair to walk and she fell. My aunt fractured her hip. She had surgery and is resting at the hospital for a few days. We don't know how much of an effect this fall will have on trying to regain some of her brain function. My parents and I had gone to visit her right after Christmas and we were so pleased that she was beginning to use our names in sentences sometimes. If you can send positive thoughts and prayers to my Aunt Ann my family would appreciate it a lot!

Now on to a happier topic, reading! I actually finished my first read of 2017 already and it was a chapter book! The book was The Matchstick Castle by Keir Graff. Click here for a summary on Goodreads. This was such a great pick for my first read! This book will be published on January 10, 2017. Penguin Young Readers sent my a copy of this book to review. One of the main characters in this book is Brian, who just finished 5th Grade. He has an idea about how his summer is going to go, until life throws him a curve-ball. We can all relate to an unexpected change in plans. He has to go stay with his Uncle and family. Soon he realizes that it is not going to be the summer that he wants. That is until he goes over the fence into the woods and discovers the oddest, most interesting house he has ever seen. This book kept me interested from the first page until the end. I had to keep pulling myself away from the book so that I could clean my house! I'm so glad that I picked this as my first read for 2017 and I highly recommend that you pick up a copy.

I've already started my second read of 2017. It is Journey's End by Rachel Hawkins. Hopefully I'll be able to post an update next week. On January 5th please check back for my Must Reads in 2017! You can read my final post on my Must Reads in 2016 in the previous post.

It seems like just the other day I was getting ready to go back to school! It has been an interesting year, but one that I am happy to see end. Two major things have dominated my fall. I referenced one in my last post, my aunt fell and suffered a severe traumatic brain injury. It has been an adjustment for my family especially my mom, her sister. Aunt Ann continues to make slow progress and she is actually beginning to recognize us. So we are grateful for these small blessings. The other event was a cousin has been diagnosed with Stage 3 ovarian cancer. She had surgery in October and has now begun 18 weeks of chemotherapy. We are thinking positively and hoping for the best. So my reading has taken a bit of hit this fall. Though I did read most of my Must Reads!
<span style="color: #38761d; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="color: #38761d; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">They are: Everyone Loves Bacon, Do Not Open The Box, Booked, Be A Friend, Bear's Big Day, Duck Duck Porcupine, Stormy Night, Hoot and Peep, Horrible Bear, Mr. Lemoncello's Library Olympics, Snappsy the Alligator (Did Not Ask to be in This Book), The War That Saved My Life, Comics Squad: Lunch, Firelight (Amulet #7), Hour of Bees, Phoebe and Her Unicorn, Chicken in Space, Pax, Twenty Yawns, Penguin's Christmas Wish, and It's Not Time For Sleeping.
<span style="color: #38761d; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="color: #38761d; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Out of 29 books I read 21! I feel really good about this, considering everything that has been going on in my life. I'm still trying to work on my nonfiction book gap. I think this will be something that I am always going to be working on!
<span style="color: #38761d; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="color: #38761d; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I also read some books that were not on my original Must Reads in 2016 posts. But if I had known about them when I was writing in January, I would have added them. They were Took, Interstellar Cinderella, Wolf Hollow, Ms. Bixby's Last Day, and Sachiko: A Nagasaki Bomb Survivor's Story
<span style="color: #38761d; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="color: #38761d; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Two of these books have stuck with me for months after I read them. The first book was Ms. Bixby's Last Day by John David Anderson. Click here for a summary on Goodreads. This book is such an emotional roller coaster from the beginning to the end. I always love books that celebrate the education profession because we get a lot of negative thrown at us these days. This book reminded me why I got into this profession. I was not expecting to like this book as much as I did. I have recommended it for so many of my teacher friends. One teacher at my school picked it up and is reading it to her class. But she was a bit mad because I didn't warn her that she would need tissues. In fact, she had to hand off the book to one student because she couldn't keep reading! This book is one that will stay with me for a long time. I have a feeling that I will be rereading this one again!
<span style="color: #38761d; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="color: #38761d; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">
<span style="color: #38761d; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><span style="color: #38761d; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="color: #38761d; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">The second book was Sachiko: A Nagasaki Bomb Survivor's Story by Caren Stelson. Click here for a summary on Goodreads. I was able to read an ARC of this book from NetGalley. this book was published in October. Wow, just wow! This book is so powerful. I knew a bit about the creation of atomic bomb and the events surrounding the dropping of them. But I really didn't know about what happened in the areas after the bombs fell. My heart is heavy thinking about what all the innocent victims had to go through. This is a story that needs to be told. If you have not read this book, I highly suggest that you get a copy to read. This is a powerful read and one that I will never forget.
<span style="color: #38761d; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="color: #38761d; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I hope everyone had a great reading year! I can't wait to see what everyone wants to read in 2017 because I need some ideas!
<span style="color: #38761d; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

I guess maybe my title should be: It's Monday, I'm Still Not Reading!!! I have not been doing a lot of reading. I am in a huge reading slump and I'm looking to my Nerdy book pals for some help! I've only posted once since July and I've been staying off Twitter. I guess I just needed to take a step back from a lot of things. I'm trying to get back to it, because I feel less alone with books and my friends on Twitter.

In August, actually my first day back to work, we found out that my aunt fell and suffered a severe traumatic brain injury. Her brain was so swollen that her brain stem moved. The bleeding was stopped and her brain isn't swollen anymore, but she will never be the same again. So I've been trying to help out my mom as she adjusts to a new normal with her sister. It has been hard to know that she went from being a healthy active person to someone who doesn't recognize her own family. I think that my family and I have been going through a bit of a depression over what has happened to my aunt. This makes you realize you need to live each day to the fullest and hug your loved ones tight!
I have read three books since October, the first was Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard: The Hammer of Thor by Rick Riordan. Click here for a summary on Goodreads. I enjoyed this one. The first in the Magnus Chase series drew me back into the world of Rick Riordan. I wasn't loving the last few books that I had read of his and was very hesitant to pick up the Magnus Chase one, but I'm glad I did. This one doesn't disappoint either.
The second book I read was The Creeping Shadow by Jonathan Stroud. Click here for a summary on Goodreads. I just LOVE this series and I may or may not have done a little happy dance in the book store when I saw this book. I am not a big creepy/scary book fan, but this one has just enough to make sure I don't read it at night. My students couldn't get enough of this series when we had it in the book fair. I know they will be excited about this installment. I can't wait to see what happens next in this series.
I knew that I would love this book even before I started page 1. Kirby Larson is an author who has turned me into a fan of historical fiction. Her words in this book wrapped around me like a warm blanket and allowed me escape reality for two hours straight because I couldn't put the book down until I finished it!
I can't believe it is October already! There has been SO much has gone on since I last posted. The new school year was off with a bang! It was a crazy time, but good time. And then I got sick! I was out of school for a week! I have never been off that long due to illness. I'm still not 100%, but I am on the road to recovery. It is going on month now and I'm ready to feel healthy again!

I find that when I am that sick, I cannot read! I am not able to focus long enough to follow a book. I was able to read a little bit, but not a whole lot during the time that I was really sick. To illustrate how sick I really was I was not able to finish Raina Telgemeier's new graphic novel Ghosts. Click here for a summary on Goodreads. I'm looking forward to starting it over again and enjoying it.

I have read a few picture books when I started to feel better. I read Salina Yoon's newest Penguin book Penguin's Christmas Wish. Click here for a summary on Goodreads. I can't say enough good things about this book. It is a bit bittersweet because this is her last Penguin book. Though, Salina has said that he will appear in other books. It was great to see other friends make an appearance in this book. If you haven't read any of Salina Yoon's Penguin books I highly recommend you run, not walk to get yourself a copy of these books. I am hoping to be able to meet Salina Yoon this May when she is appearing at a book festival near where I live.

Two other books I read are also Christmas books too. I read Jan Brett's Gingerbread Christmas. Click here for a summary on Goodreads. One of my favorite books has been The Gingerbread Baby, so I was quite happy to see this one. There is always so much going on with the illustrations as soon as I finished reading the text, I had to go back and "read" the illustrations. I always find myself getting lost in Jan Brett's illustrations. This book will be published by Penguin Random House on October 18, 2016. I was sent this copy for review.

The second book I read was also sent to me by Penguin Random House and will also be published on October 18, 2016. It is Maple and Willow's Christmas Tree by Lori Nichols. Click here for a summary on Goodreads. This book was great! I didn't know until I went to record this on Goodreads that this is the fourth in a series about these two siblings. I loved how Willow worked hard to make Christmas better when things don't go as planned. I'm going to have to find the other books about these siblings.

Since I am hopefully on the mend I will be able to be reading some more!

Happy Reading!!
This book was just published last week. I just love any kind of book about libraries and books. I couldn't wait to get a hold of this book because I am a huge Zachariah OHora fan. I just LOVED his illustration of Wolfie the Bunny! I was not disappointed with this book. The message at the end is a great one for students. The front cover gives you a bit of a hit about why the library is not quiet. It took me a bit to spot the hint. But if I had opened up the cover to look at the back and front cover at the same time I would have figured it out right away. Make sure you take a look under the book jacket. I just attended a Scholastic Reading Summit and had the pleasure of attending sessions with Mr. Schu. He talked about the importance of teaching kids to appreciate all aspects of a book, including what is hiding under the jacket.
I sat down to read a few chapters of the book as a reward for spending two hours really cleaning my house and doing laundry. Well, once I started this book I could not stop reading until I finished. Fizzy (Elizabeth), is a very easy character to relate to. Fizzy is dealing with learning a new normal after her parents divorce and start moving on with their lives. I can see this book being a really great one for students who have gone or are living through their parents divorce. Fizzy verbalizes many of the same emotions that they are having and this book might help them start some conversations. The book gave me some insights to how many of my students might be feeling as they go through this. I highly recommend you giving this book a try!
I always love the simplicity of Jeff Mack's books. This one has only two words: playtime and bedtime. Like his other book, Look, the story is played out in the illustrations. I love the back and forth between the child and the gorilla. This is a great story for reading, but for also asking kids questions about the illustrations. Many kids don't know how to "read" illustrations. Since this one has so many details in the illustrations it is a great way to begin showing them how to "read" them.
The cover of this book really caught my interest. There is a picture of a salad, but there are drawings on the items in the salad. This author/illustrator to a simple concept and turned it into something so much more. I think my favorite are the 8 flying walnuts! I can't wait to use this my kids! I plan reading this book with them and then giving them some printed pictures of everyday objects and seeing what they create.
I'm always excited when I read historical fiction book that I enjoy because for many years I stayed away from that genre. I said that it wasn't a genre I enjoyed. It just turned out I was reading the wrong historical fiction books! I loved how this book has a strong female character who never gives up. Previously visiting Alaska made this book even more interesting to me. The story is all about the settling of the Palmer Colony. Palmer happened to be a stop on my trip to Alaska. I knew that people went to Alaska and settled there, but I didn't know the history behind it. Make sure you read the author's note in the back of the book. I was so curious as to what made her decided to write about this period of time. Her notes answered my question!
I'm never disappointed when looking at a book he illustrates. After I finish reading I have to go back and study his illustrations because they are incredible! So when I was approached by Little Bee Books to have a change to review Henry Cole's newest book I jumped at the chance! His newest book is called Eddie the Bully. Click here for a summary on Goodreads. This book is a great book for the elementary level because it shows straight forward examples of bullying behavior. Sometimes it is hard for young children to come up with examples, so this book will help with those discussions. A new student comes in and changes the dynamic of the class. I can see lots of discussions coming from the addition of this student.
<span style="color: #6aa84f; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="color: #6aa84f; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Henry Cole's illustrations are outstanding as usual! His personal story of dealing with a bully at the beginning of the book really adds a lot to the book. It also give a concrete example of a way to deal with a bully. It is something that I will share when I read it to my students and encourage my teachers to read if they are the ones sharing it with students. I will be purchasing a copy or two for my library when it is published on August 2, 2016!
I download the original Broadway cast recording and have been listening to it nonstop. I was so excited to find Hamilton: The Revolution by Lin-Manuel Miranda and Jeremy McCarter. Click for a summary on Goodreads. It was so awesome to see the insights and thoughts behind the whole musical. Most times with musicals you don't get that behind the scenes look at the creation of them. Reading the all the little notes that went along the songs made them even more special. It was also so great to have the words to every song right there in front of me because there are some lyrics I missed. I haven't listened to a Broadway cast recording this much since I saw Phantom of the Opera for the first time. Now my dream is to one day see Hamilton! I'm planning on reading the biography that started it all this summer. And a am so happy that Lin-Manuel Miranda has made it cool to be a history nerd!
I've been reading many of my Must Reads in 2016 as well as a few that have been some Must Reads! Here is my original post<span style="color: #38761d; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">. Looking back over those that I have read so far, I can't think of one that I haven't liked. Of course, there are some other books that have come up along the way. I've also been making an effort to read more nonfiction books. I've always said that nonfiction is my book gap. Out of the 29 that I first selected I've read 15 so far.
<span style="color: #38761d; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

Lemoncello's Library Olympics, Snappsy the Alligator (Did Not Ask to be in This Book), The War That Saved My Life, Comics Squad: Lunch, Firelight (Amulet #7), Hour of Bees, and Phoebe and Her Unicorn.
<span style="color: #38761d; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">
<span style="color: #38761d; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I have slipped in a few other reads that were not on my Must Reads in 2016. I really enjoyed Took by Mary Downing Hahn. It has enough creepy for my students without being too scary. It is on the Maryland Black-Eyed Susan chapter book nominee list for next school year. Also on the picture book list is Intersteller Cinderella by Deborah Underwood. This was a fun take on the typical Cinderella tale.
<span style="color: #38761d; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="color: #38761d; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I've read two that were not on my original list, but need to be on everyone's to read list. These two books have stayed with me long after I finished reading them. The first is Wolf Hollow by Lauren Wolk. Click here for a summary on Goodreads. This book was incredibly well written and one that I could not put down. This book made me feel so many emotions, including ones that I was not expecting. I continued to think about the ending of this book for days after I finished it. If you haven't read this one yet, make sure you add it to the top of your to read list.
<span style="color: #38761d; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="color: #38761d; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">The second book is Sachiko: A Nagasaki Bomb Survivor's Story by Caren Stelson. Click here for a summary on Goodreads. I was able to read an ARC of this book from NetGalley. It will be published on October 1st. Wow, just wow! This book is so powerful. I knew a bit about the creation of atomic bomb and the events surrounding the dropping of them. But I really didn't know about what happened after the bombs fell. My heart is heavy thinking about what all the innocent victims had to go through. This is a story that needs to be told. Make sure you get a hold of a copy of this book in October.
<span style="color: #38761d; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="color: #38761d; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Happy Reading!!
It has been three months since I've posted anything on this blog. This past year was my 20th year in education. I taught in the classroom (3rd Grade & 1st Grade) for 6 years, was the Media Specialist at a High School for 1 year, and I've been a Media Specialist at an Elementary School for 13 years. This year was one of the hardest in my professional career. I wasn't sure I was going to make it out on the other side, but I have and I'm trying to get back to doing things that I like to do.

I know that I shouldn't feel guilty about not blogging, but I do. It is something that I really enjoy doing. I'm going to try and work my way back to blogging at least once a week this summer. It might be more some weeks, but I'm going to try for one post. I know that I've been neglecting my Twitter feed as well, and that is going to change too.

I'm also recommitting myself to taking care of myself. During the holidays, I put back on a little bit of my weight. Not too much, but enough for me to be frustrated. Because I continued to walk after school, I didn't put as much on as I most likely would have. The best part about summer is that I can get out and walk in the mornings. I started with a 2 mile walk and then bumped it up to a 2.5 mile walk. So I'm going to keep at it and really start watching what I eat again!

Happy Reading!!
It feels like forever since I have posted about what I've been reading. It also feels like forever since I've done a lot of reading. I was planning on catching up during Spring Break, but life made me slow down and take some time with my family. I had to go back home to PA for a funeral. I won't have wanted to be any other place than with family during our time to say good bye.
<span style="background-color: white; color: #38761d; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 22px;">

<span style="background-color: white; color: #38761d; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 22px;">I've been in the madness that is my March BOOK Madness. See the previous post. I'm now done to the final two, Lady Pancake & Sir French Toast by Josh Funk vs. Please Mr. Panda by Steve Anthony. Can't wait to see who will win!! Stay tuned!
<span style="background-color: white; color: #38761d; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 22px;">

<span style="color: #38761d; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I started back to work last Tuesday from Spring Break, but there was no easing back in. I was finishing all the prep work for my school visit from Marc Tyler Nobleman. He has written over 70 books, but his visit was focused on Boys of Steel: The Creators of Superman and Billy the Boy Wonder: The Secret Co-Creator of Batman. I'll be posting abut his visit later this week. A sneak peek: It was AWESOME!!!!
<span style="color: #38761d; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

I've read The Nest by Kenneth Oppel and illustrated Jon Klassen. Click here for a summary on Goodreads. Such an interesting book. I'm still trying to decide if I liked or if I didn't. I'm having a hard time deciding. On one hand the story was interesting enough to hold my interest and continue reading to fine out how it ended. On the other hand, the plot was a little out there, even for me. In a few months, a reread might be in order. I'm interested to see what others thought. There were not a lot of illustrations in this book, but Jon Klassen made them really creepy which fits to overall theme of this book.
<span style="color: #38761d; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I read Phoebe and Her Unicorn by Dana Simpson. Click here for a summary on Goodreads. I mainly read this book because it is a Maryland Black-Eyed Susan nominated book for Graphic Novels. It has been widely popular with my students. In fact, I had to check it out from the public library because it was never on my shelf for long! I can see why my students like the book. I enjoyed the book and can't wait to share the second and third book with my students.
I've always been a fan of Mary Downing Hahn. As I was growing up, I could always count on her for a scary read and this one did not disappoint! This is a Maryland Black-Eyed Susan nominated book for chapter books next school year. I know that many of my students will be lining up to read this book. Ghost stories are always so popular. I started this book the last day of my Spring Break and I had to finish it before I went to bed that night. Even though, I had to stay up past my bedtime. I'm still wondering what happened to February and most of March! I've been doing some reading, but not a lot. I've had a lot going on with my March BOOK Madness. Last year my assistant took care of the bulletin board and updating it, but this year she is gone and I've taken it on. I didn't realize how much work it took at the beginning since I start with 16 pairs (32 books)! But I have loved every minute! Except when I had a few students decided to cheat. I put a stop to it as soon as I found out.
This was a great follow-up to the first book Escape From Mr. Lemoncello's Library. I loved all the references to many of my favorite books! The appearances of some fellow nerdy book club members were an added bonus! The Dewey references made a little test for me to see if I knew what subject was being referenced. But once again this book made me realize how bad I am at rebus questions. So I won't be answering any of those questions if I find myself competing in the Library Olympics!
