It's Monday! What Are You Reading?

This meme was started by Sheila at Book Journey and the kids' version borrowed from the wonderful ladies at Teach Mentor Texts.

I wish I could say that I did a lot reading this weekend, but I didn't.  It was a very stressful weekend.  My week didn't end on a very good note, and I'm not one to easily let things go.  So I brooded about things all weekend.  I'm working on letting things go that I have no control over.  I'll be a lot happier that way.

On to the little bit of reading that I did do this weekend.  I read about 15 picture books.  There were 4 that really stood out to me.  In no particular order, Chicken Butt by Erica S. Perl, Ducks Don't Wear Socks by John Nedwidek, Hopper and Wilson by Maria Van Lieshout, and Kindergarten Diary by Antoinette Portis.

I also began reading Born to Fly by Michael Ferrari.  I haven't gotten too far into the book, but I'm interested to read more.

I've got some more picture books and a few chapter books that I picked up at the library this weekend.  Hopefully I'll be able to do some more reading this week.  I've got to get my house cleaned, so I might try to bribe myself:  a little cleaning and then a little reading.  I'm still trying to get my Google Reader under control.  There are so many great posts, but boy I can't let it go without me checking for even a day.

I do need a favor.  I'm asking for your help.  I'm putting together a list of books for my students as suggestions for over the summer.  I'm grouping them in the following way: K-1, 2-3, 4-5.  I'm trying to put together book trailers for the kids to watch for some on the list.  If you have any suggestions please leave them in the comment section.  Thank you in advance!!

Happy Reading!!

  1. Stacey what a great idea on the book lists for students. I will have to think about that.

  3. Well, for the 2-3, everyone seems to be recommending the Babymouse books, so that's one group. What about the shorter Patricia MacLachlan books for the 2-3 or 4-5 depending on levels, like Journey? And for 4-5 for sure, there's Natalie Babbit's Tuck Everlasting and Kneeknock Rise or The Search for Delicious. Couldn't the 4-5 read Hatchet or one of the other Gary Paulsen's? Good luck with the list. There are so many. I would guess you have some early reader sets for the K-1, like Nate The Great & Little Bear. Sorry for your bad end to the week. Hope today's start is much better!

  4. This time of year is so hard. It's just stressful in general. We will all be ready for summer break. :)

I will have to think a bit on book suggestions for you! I do love the Ivan and Wonder trailers for 4-5 - perfect books. I haven't seen the Fake Mustache trailer but I loved the book for 4-5. It would go great in that group, too. That's a start!

  5. Love your picture book reads, especially Chicken Butt and Kindergarten Diaries. Some of my suggestions for your summer reading lists primarily for the younger kids include Henry and Mudge, Mercy Watson, The Lighthouse Family Series (Rylant), Marty McGuire, Anna Hibiscus, Frankie Pickle, Baby Mouse, and Judy Blume's Pain and the Great One series.

  6. My son is in 3rd (but reads on a higher level) and he loves:
Amulet; Lunch Lady; Origami Yoda/Darth Paper; Fake Mustache; the younger Mike Lupica sports series; Shark Wars.
I think 4/5 would love Wonder, The Fourth Stall (and The Fourth Stall II), The One and Only Ivan, The Mighty Miss Malone.
Have you checked StorySnoops.com for suggestions? That's a great site for age recommendations!
